Proving You Recycle Is Big Business...

Wed. Apr 20th, 2011 at 2:33pm

Recycling , salvaging and disposing of construction materials is big business and has a huge impact on our environment as one of the leading sources of waste to landfill. States, counties and cities have enforced strict recycling ordinances  to require contractors to recycle and divert useable materials to new processing facilities. But it's not as easy as it sounds. Contractors are forced to put up bonds that will not be returned to the contractor if the recycling requirements for the city is not met. These bonds can range from as little as $500 to well over $150,000 and more.

The Problem

More importantly the only tools provided by the cities to the contractors to comply with these requirements is a list of recycling facilities and a form to fill out. As if we don't more important things to do. These plans take anywhere from 10 minutes for experienced contractors to several hours for large scale projects. Not to mention once you submit your waste management plan to the city they may deny it and make you do it again. I thought this was supposed to be a green thing but it sounds like all this does is waste peoples time  and generates a lot of paper.

The solution

Green Halo a San Francisco company has launched  the first fully integrated web based waste management tool designed to help contractors, cities, counties and states comply with state mandated recycling requirements, such as CalGreen, for residential and commercial construction projects.

Green Halo streamlines the diversion reporting process allowing contractors to create waste management plans for their construction project from their desktop or mobile device. The contractor enters their project information, selects the materials that will be salvaged, recycled or disposed, selects their preferred method of hauling and Green Halo does the rest.  Green Halo instantly locates the closest recycling facility for each material to the contractor's project saving them time, fuel  and money, while reducing the carbon footprint impact of the project itself. No more paper, no more headaches.

Then throughout the course of excavation, demolition and construction all the recycling and disposal tickets that are generated are entered into Green Halo to make sure the project is complying with the city's recycling requirements.  Projects in Green are good to go, and projects in red fail to meet the requirements and could be subject to fines or forfeiture of their bonds. At least now contractors don't have to wait until the end of the project to find out, they now know if their project complies in real time.

More importantly contractors and cities see this as a tool to provide real time recycling data for both parties and opens a line of communication between the parties to work towards the ultimate goal of diverting materials from landfills.

Another key benefit of Green Halo are the statists the system generates. A contractor uses statistics generated from a Green Halo project to prove to potential new clients how green they really are. Cities, counties and states are also very interested in these trends and statistics as well to help determine how well their ordinances are really working.

Green Halo is available in most cities throughout the Bay Area and Southern California.  Locally cities like Walnut Creek, Oakland, Fremont, Emeryville and San Jose have been actively using the system with great success.
